Seniors can feel lots of stress at Halloween. Being alone in the dark along with the large amounts of strangers coming to the door can be very intimidating. When you add in scary masks the unknown is greatly magnified. Follow these tips to ensure a FUN and SAFE evening.
Stay inside while passing out candy- don’t invite anyone in!
Make sure area is well lit- Use both inside and outside lights. When you can see what is going on, you will be more aware of your surroundings.
Keep all floor, entry ways, and porches free of decorations to avoid tripping and falling
Don’t drive- During trick-or-treat times children are often running from house to house. The added hustle and bustle can make driving more difficult than usual. If you have to drive, be extra cautious and
drive slowly!
Use battery powered lights to light your jack-o-lanterns. Flames from candles are a fire hazard. Part of a costume could catch on fire or if forgotten it could cause a house fire.
Pass out candy with a friend- Everything is safer (and more fun) with a buddy!
We want Halloween to be a happy and cheerful community event. Share these tips with your senior loved one and Happy Halloween!
